Google Takeout download failed, or a part is missing?

Big Takeout exports come as many large files, and one interrupted download is enough to leave a hole. The good news: you rarely need to start again. Find the part that's missing or broken, download just that one, and add it.

Signs a part is missing or broken

  • A gap in the numbering: you have -001 to -009 and -011, but no -010.
  • A file is smaller than the others for no reason, or still ends in .crdownload (Chrome), .download (Safari) or .part (Firefox).
  • A zip won't open: “Unable to expand” on a Mac, or “The Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid” on Windows.
  • Folders or photos you know you had aren't there after extracting.

Find which part it is

Open Google Takeout's Manage exports page and choose your export. It lists every part with its own Download button. Compare that list with the files you have: the same number of parts, numbered without gaps, and no unfinished downloads.

ZipCombiner checks each zip as it extracts. A damaged or incomplete part ends Couldn't combine, and Details… shows why, while the rest still finish. That tells you exactly which part to download again.

Download just that part again

  1. On the Manage exports page, click Download next to the part you need. Google may ask you to sign in again first.
  2. Leave it to finish on a steady connection, then check the file no longer ends in .crdownload, .download or .part.
  3. Drop the new zip into ZipCombiner, click Change Folder… and choose the folder you combined into before, then click Extract and Combine. If a file is already there, ZipCombiner asks before replacing it.

If downloads keep failing

  • An export can be downloaded for about a week, and Google allows only a few attempts per part, so don't spend them on a shaky connection.
  • Download one part at a time rather than all at once, and keep the computer from going to sleep until it's done.
  • Check there's room on the drive: each part needs its full size free, and extracting needs about as much again.
  • Try another browser, or turn off download-manager and security extensions for the download.
  • If the export has expired or a part has run out of attempts, create a new export; your data is still in your Google account. Choose a smaller file size (2 GB) so a failed attempt costs less, or have Takeout deliver it to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box instead of a download link, if you have room there.

Choosing .zip when you set up the export makes all of this easier; see .zip or .tgz.

Questions

Do I have to download the whole Takeout again?

No. Download only the missing or broken part, as long as the export hasn't expired. Each part is a complete zip on its own.

How long do Google Takeout downloads last?

About a week. After that, or once a part has run out of download attempts, create a new export.

Why does my Takeout zip say it's invalid or can't be expanded?

Usually the download stopped early. Download that part again from the Manage exports page.

Will ZipCombiner still extract the parts that did download?

Yes. Each zip is extracted on its own, so a damaged one doesn't stop the rest. Add the replacement later and extract it into the same folder.
